2009 to 2010 continue to be a year of experiments. We will experiment with newer containers used to plant coffee seedlings as the traditional way uses a lot of valuable top soil. New containers are cone shaped and use far less soil. Also we are experimenting with various types of organic fertilizer along with use of foliar fertilizer that are sprayed onto the leaves themselves to promote absorption of nutrients and reduce polluting the ground water with excessive fertilizer. Water is always a problem in the farms as we have 4 mountain tops as part of our farm and getting the water from a creek or dam uphill 150 feet has been a problem. We have used gas water pump, which only adds to excessive fuel consumption and air pollution. Solar water pump is expensive and may not be able to pump up to 150 feet. We are trying out a Fleming Ram Piston pump that uses the natural fall of water to push water up hill. We have been successful with 10 feet of water fall through drive pipes to the Fleming pump and have achieved a height of 70 feet. But we need to push the water another 40 feet. We will temporary build a water basin at mid mountain so to pump water with a gasoline pump or Ram pump. We have started some experiments of selecting naturally occurring coffee seedlings from the farm. Coffee cherries that naturally falls to the ground grows into seedlings. We plucked a many seedlings and transplanted them to the nursery. Many seedlings I selected looked dwarfed and sick looking. With a lot of care and a good fertilizer program, I hope to be able to revitalize these seedlings into healthy coffee plants. This will allow me to use our farm as an “ECOLOGICAL” seedling bed where we can select naturally occurring seedlings instead of making our own seedling beds which takes considerable time and labor. It takes 60 days for seeds to germinate and another 1-2 months to produce the first pair of leaves. The Coffee harvest is only beginning. We are in the process of picking early fruits so they don’t dry up on the trees or produce disease.
